Coughing into your elbows instead of your hands was a new practice for many during the Covid pandemic. Children picked it up quickly but it was sometimes harder for adults to remember. The Dutch design company Raw Color thought about this problem and in 2020 designed the Elbow Sock, what they called "a handkerchief for your elbows".
According to their website:
"it adds another layer to spare your clothes. An easy hack that everyone could apply. You simply look for that well-known single sock that lost it’s other half. Cut the toes off and slide it over your arm and you’re good to go. After use you simply take it off and wash it at 60 degrees... Apart from it’s functional aspect, the Elbow Sock could also be seen as statement that raises awareness and serves as a visual reminder for Corona-proof coughing. Elbow Sock is a contribution for Create Cures is a public welfare activity initiated by a group of designers, aiming to promote the development of public health in a designer's way. Create Cures (CC for short), CC is also a common measurement unit in medical treatment, which is also the hope that everyone involved can do their part, give some light, and become the beginning of a better future. Create Cures is initated by Frank Chou and Chen Min.
