How do we make sense of our material world, together? This is the central question Anna invited the audience to consider in her inaugural lecture "The Matter of Hospitals: An Ethnographer Investigates".

We have been very fortunate to be involved in the Picture This program. In this fantastic collaboration, illustration students from Scotland are paired with researchers in our Faculty to create illustrations related to research projects.

With this device we are protoyping how to gather sensory details of a fieldsite as a team.

In this article, where the reader also becomes a viewer, gains access to a deeper understanding of sensory and embodied forms of knowledge in the medical field, while engaging with innovative ways of transmitting knowledge within the history of science and medicine.

The Matter of Hospitals is a book composed of a collection of 26 alphabetically organized essays, rediscovers the reality of those elements present in hospitals that sometimes go unnoticed from a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural and multi-scalar approach. Through these experiences, a narrative is constructed, interwoven with the lives of the people who inhabit these spaces, inviting the reader to rethink and re-create the current context of hospitals.

Innovation and DIY are not mutually exclusive, and that's precisely what this catalog proposes. Throughout its pages, students and faculty present creative ideas that rethink medical materials from a critical perspective, questioning their origins and exploring the possibility of developing more sustainable and accessible alternatives.

What if true innovation in medicine wasn't expensive new technology, but a ping-pong ball and a banana? This is what proposes "Clinical Tools: A DIY Catalogue for the Creative", rethinking clinical materials from an imaginative and sustainable way.
