On November 7, 2025, the book launch for The Matter of Hospitals took place at Boekhandel De Tribune.
This book brings together 26 alphabetically arranged essays, proposes a rediscovery of the reality of those elements present in hospitals that often go unnoticed. It does so from a multidisciplinary, intercultural, and multi-scalar perspective, offering new insights into the hospital environment.
During the event, we had the opportunity to hear from Anna Harris, editor and one of the book's authors, who presented and shared the creative process behind the work and its collaborative approach. Rianne Letschert, President of Maastricht University, also spoke, highlighting the close integration between the university and the hospital. She emphasized the book as a clear example of the collaboration between the MUMC+ (University of Maastricht) and the university, with authors from both institutions working together on the content.
Throughout the evening, we also had the opportunity to hear from Myrthe Eussen, a doctoral candidate in sustainable surgery, and Tessa Keegel, Senior Research Fellow at Monash University (Australia). Myrthe presented the chapter titled "Waste," which focuses specifically on waste generated in operating rooms, co-authored with Nicole Bouvy. Tessa, for her part, shared an excerpt from her insightful and unique contribution to the book and reflected on the topic of organ transplantation.
The evening unfolded in an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the cozy ambiance of the Boekhandel De Tribune bookstore. This special character was made possible by the hard work of its team, the valuable contributions of the speakers, and, of course, everyone who attended the presentation.
Following this enriching session, attendees enjoyed a relaxed moment, sharing drinks while informally discussing the book and its themes.
